The concept of "time" is both abstract and precise; it exists invisibly yet leaves visible traces and marks across our lives. As we navigate the flow of time, our perception of the past solidifies into memories, and the present continuously fades into history, while we anticipate the future. The present moment holds meaning only in relation to past experiences and future expectations.
Culturally, the continuous reference to history forms the foundation for social and cultural progress, where old cultures inspire the present to create the new. Yet, in a contemporary setting, this notion of innovation faces challenges. As postmodern theory suggests, future expectations may become stifled, leading to a "cancellation of the future" — a concept explored through Mark Fisher's idea of the hauntological.
My creative film project seeks to delve into this phenomenon, exploring how contemporary individuals embody behaviours influenced by the hauntological experience and a perceived loss of future.
The film presents a dialogue between a contemporary character (the narrator) and an AI. The AI notices the narrator's peculiar behaviour, such as brushing their teeth twice in the same morning, and seeks an explanation. Through this conversation, the film aims to illustrate the impact of a culture dominated by hauntological effects, prompting viewers to reflect on the underlying reasons for this modern-day mentality.
